How strong is Bamboo?

How strong is Bamboo?

This question has many answers depending upon the quality and usage of the Bamboo. Let’s discuss according to various aspects.

Bamboo is stronger than matererials such as steel when it comes to Tension. Steel has a tensile strength of 23,000 pounds per square inch, but this is surpassed by Bamboo with a noticeable lead at 28,000 pounds per square inch. In compression, it is weaker than steel. But it withstands better in compression than concrete. Therefore, it is mostly used as reinforcement. It has impermeable layer outside it which protects it from moisture.

Steel is also much heavier than Bamboo and if you consider the weight/strength ratio, for construction and reinforcement, Bamboo is a much better option.

Is Bamboo Harder than Wood? Yes! In fact, it is 2-3 times harder and stronger than most hardwoods, including oak.
